Oscar’s Movies Review (Part 1)

Since I’ve been watching several Oscar awards nominated/winning movies like the Constant Gardener, Brokeback Mountain, Hustle & Flow, Transamerica and Crash, it would be sensible for me to give my amateurish and humble opinion on the various movies. !!Spoilers Forewarned!!

Note: The below reviews would not be possible without http://www.imdb.com/ as well as the fabulous productions of the films.

Constant Gardener

Movie Synopsis – An activist (campaigner) was murdered in Africa or so it seems. However, the truth lies far from that, and the widower (male widow) seeks to find out the truth, tossing his life in danger.

My personal opinion: The scenery of Africa, culture and realism of the directing etc helps to promote this movie experience. The actors/actresses were brilliant in their roles and the script itself is thought-provoking as it questions the way that large corporations handle situations. Are they really helping to create jobs and boost economic conditions or are they actually harming poor people. Thus, it creates the effect of “The poor gets poorer while the rich gets richer”.

Length of film: 129 mins

Best defining quote/tagline: “Big pharmaceuticals are right up there with the arms dealers.”

Hustle and Flow

Movie Synopsis – Story starts with a pimp who has an ambition of becoming a hip hop rap star, however the odds are against him as he struggles to make ends meet. Worse still, he’s approaching the grand old age of 40, which is considered “old” in the dog-eat-dog world. Not merely an inspirational story, the true to life storyline is superb.

My personal opinion: The convincing acting of the lead character, Terrence Howard as Djay fits to a T. The songs that are created in the film form a perfect combination with the story. It details the hard work and amount of blood, sweat and tears that the pimp took in making the record. It also opens up my mind and I realized that the whole process of making an album is much more complicated and it requires not only diligence, talent and a great deal of luck. You would really need to go through the whole movie to understand the meaning that the song is conveying. Pls do watch this movie.

Length of film: 116 mins

Best defining quote/tagline: “The music will inspire them. The dream will unite them. This summer get crunk*.”

*crunk – slang. Mixture of the word crazy and drunk

PS: This post shall be my first official entry of this blog. The post below is an unofficial entry tt shows the crunk side of me. Hah~ A new word learned.
